T1184: SSH Hijacking

mitre-lateral-movement | Level: Easy  | Total Lab Runs: 0 | Premium Lab

Lab Scoreboard

SSH Hijacking is a technique to leverage an existing SSH session to SSH into another machine. In order to access an SSH server (which uses public-key authentication) through another server, the private key is not kept on the server. Instead, ssh-agent forwarding is performed on the client machine. The SSH agent socket will be available on the server and can be used to authenticate with the other SSH server via the ssh-agent running on the client machine.

In this lab, there are three machines and two networks. On the first network, a client and an SSH server are present, The first SSH server is also connected to the second network on which another SSH server is present. The second SSH server cannot be accessed directly by the client on the first network.  In order to connect to the second SSH server, the client has used ssh-agent forwarding while connecting to the first SSH server.

This is a simulated assumed breach scenario. You have a direct connection to a simulated corporate network. Now, to take it further you are provided phished credentials of root user of the first SSH server.

UsernamePassword
rootpassword

Objective: Perform SSH Hijacking and retrieve the flag from the target machine attached to the second network.

Instructions:

  • This lab is dedicated to you! No other users are on this network :)
  • Once you start the lab, you will have access to a root terminal of a Kali instance
  • Your Kali has an interface with IP address 192.X.Y.Z. Run "ip addr" to know the values of X and Y.
  • Do not attack the gateway located at IP address 192.X.Y.1
  • postgresql is not running by default so Metasploit may give you an error about this when starting

Verify:
1. Flag

Technical Support for this Lab:

There is a reason we provide unlimited lab time: you can take as much time as you need to solve a lab. However, we realize that sometimes hints might be necessary to keep you motivated!

We currently provide technical support limited to:

  • Giving hints for a lab exercise
  • In rare circumstances, if you have totally given up (NO!!!) then tell you how to solve it. This will be limited to sharing the solution video or lab report
  • A lab exercise fails to load or has errors in it

If you need technical support, please email  attackdefense@pentesteracademy.com  clearly mention the name and link of the lab exercise and other essential details. The more descriptive you are, the faster we can help you. We will get back to you within 24 hours or less.
