What is SaltStack Salt?
Built on Python, Salt uses simple and human-readable YAML combined with event-driven automation to deploy and configure complex IT systems. In addition to leveling-up vRealize Automation SaltStack Config, Salt can be found under the hood of products from Juniper, Cisco, Cloudflare, Nutanix, SUSE, and Tieto, to name a few.
What are CVE-2021-25281 and CVE-2021-25282?
An issue was discovered in through SaltStack Salt before 3002.5. salt-api does not honor eauth credentials for the wheel_async client. Thus, an attacker can remotely run any wheel modules on the master.
This vulnerability was assigned a base score rating of 9.8 (critical)!
An issue was discovered in through SaltStack Salt before 3002.5. The salt.wheel.pillar_roots.write method is vulnerable to directory traversal.
This vulnerability was assigned a base score rating of 9.1 (critical)!
In this lab environment, the user is going to get access to a Kali GUI instance. A SaltStack Salt API instance vulnerable to an RCE vulnerability, identified by CVEs CVE-2021-25281 and CVE-2021-25282, is running on the target server. It can be accessed using the tools installed on Kali at https://demo.ine.local:8000.
Objective: Leverage the vulnerable SaltStack Salt API to exploit the unauthenticated RCE vulnerability, get command execution on the target server and retrieve the flag.
This lab is dedicated to you! No other users are on this network :)
Once you start the lab, you will have access to a root terminal of a Kali instance
Your Kali has an interface with IP address 192.X.Y.Z. Run "ip addr" to know the values of X and Y.
The target server should be located at the IP address 192.X.Y.3.
Do not attack the gateway located at IP address 192.X.Y.1
