Lab Walkthrough Video:

The SHA-384 (Secure Hash Algorithm) is 384 bit variant of SHA-2 hash function which was developed by NSA. This family of algorithms were published in public by NIST in 2001. SHA-2 was widely used in SSL, SSH, PGP, S/MIME, IPSEc etc. It is still in use and will be eventually completely replaced by SHA-3.

A SHA-384 hash of a password is provided in digest.txt file. The password is either taken from the dictionary or generated using the password policy. The digest.txt file and the dictionary file "1000000-password-seclists.txt" is present in the user's home directory.

Objective: Recover the password.

If the Dictionary attack fails then use the following password Policy

  • Password length is less than 5 characters i.e. 0 < length < 5
  • Password can only contain characters from this character set:  a-z, 0-9

1. Password

Technical Support for this Lab:

There is a reason we provide unlimited lab time: you can take as much time as you need to solve a lab. However, we realize that sometimes hints might be necessary to keep you motivated!

We currently provide technical support limited to:

  • Giving hints for a lab exercise
  • In rare circumstances, if you have totally given up (NO!!!) then tell you how to solve it. This will be limited to sharing the solution video or lab report
